Recognising Innovation
Sponsored by Spark TSL
Designed to recognise those behind the scenes, this award celebrates pushing the boundaries, using innovative, novel or pioneering ideas.
This award is open to all across the various roles hospital broadcasting organisations may have. Technical to administrative, fundraising to Trust or Board engagement – this award celebrates achieving a goal using new and inspiring techniques.
During these challenging times, we know that stations have had to make changes to be able to continue their excellent service, going over and above just using a playout system. For example, how have you raised funds to ensure you have been able to cover your broadcasting costs? What other innovative ways has your station used to keep broadcasting and providing a service during these challenging times?
Tony Taulbut
Durham Hospitals Radio
Tony has over 17 years of dedicated service to Durham Hospitals Radio and is described as being the technical glue - literally holding everything together for the station with a cheery smile and no complaints whatsoever.
He has spent many many late nights into the early hours repairing faulty equipment so that the systems were fully operational for the other team members avoiding any drop in service to the patients.
As DHR has been operational for over 60 years the technical equipment infrastructure has needed a number of significant upgrades and improvements over the years . Tony has been an absolute wizard in researching, designing and installing many new additions to the studio set ups and indeed has created a whole new studio for the station this year adding to the other two which have also changed in content.
As the North East is a hotbed of football it was down to Tony to come up with an Outside Broadcasting system to allow patients to listen to the station's commentary of their favourite teams whilst recovering in hospital. He did not disappoint and created a system that is used for various live sporting events and concerts keeping a crucial link to the outside world.
His efforts in researching and compiling relevant music for inclusion in the station's 60th Anniversary weekend in August was described as outstanding, making the presenters' workload much easier and ensuring this major event ran smoothly.
In summary Tony “Blue-wires“ Taulbut is a greatly valued and appreciated key member of the team being a superb friend to all his fellow volunteers giving them the support and confidence to get on with their own important contribution to Durham Hospitals Radio.
The John Whitney Outstanding Contribution Award
Sponsored by Heartbeat Publications
The award celebrates an outstanding contribution, by an individual, to their station/hospital radio. The nominee does not necessarily have to be a long-serving member, as a contribution over a short period of time can also be transformational to a station. The nomination should explain why the candidate has made a real and long-lasting impact. The nominee must be working in hospital radio, may be drawn from the broadcasting arena but may equally be found from a technical or administrative background. They may have worked for single or multiple stations over the years.
Richard Smith
nominated by Hospital Radio Basingstoke
Richard was nominated by Hospital Radio Basingstoke and the judge was impressed with his commitment to hospital radio, despite not being a member of a station. Richard has done a huge amount to help Basingstoke over the years, as he has for many stations.
Richard has been involved in hospital radio since the early 1980s, but it was in 2003 that his name started to be more well known on more than one station when he started producing The A to Z of Pop.
The show was quickly snapped up by station after station. Over 100 stations broadcast the show in some form.
In 2012, Richard produced the first Big Broadcast with a 27 hour live marathon broadcast from his home studio on nearly 30 hospital radio stations in the UK and Ireland. The idea was continued on New Year’s Eve and for the following decade, The New Year’s Eve Big Broadcast continued the tradition, a show that got bigger and more ambitious every year and was heard on over 50 hospital radio stations. The show included special guests, competitions, a panto and of course requests from around the UK
As well as Richard there was a strong team behind the show. Hospital Radio Basingstoke said in their nomination that it proved to be one of the most listened to shows in the Christmas schedules.
The Big Broadcast isn't eligible for an award - as such - however the judges agreed with Hospital Radio Basingstoke's nomination, that Richard deserves recognition having pushed the boundaries of hospital radio for over a decade - as well as his wider commitment to hospital braodcasting for over 40 years.
