The National Hospital Radio Awards is an annual celebration of the excellent standards found in hospital radio stations across the country. The awards are open to any HBA member station.

The awards are divided into different categories, each one recognising a specific area of excellence; some are awarded to individuals, others to stations.

It is also a difficult format to get right to ensure the listener feels included rather than on the outside.

Catagories Without Shortlists

There are some categories where the HBA awards a single prize and where a shortlist is not released. These are:

The John Witney Award

The award will be made to the person who has made an outstanding contribution to Hospital Radio over a period of years.
The winner may be drawn from broadcasting but might equally be found from a technical or administrative background. They may have worked for a single station or a series of stations.

Fundraiser of the Year

Hospital Radio relies on fundraising to keep station’s on the air throughout the country.
This award seeks to showcase someone that has made a significant achievement in fundraising during the last 12 months.


The nomination certificates have been sent out to the address submitted with the stations entries. If they do not arrive or you notice any errors please contact Iain Lee by e-mail. Please be aware that any errors not rectified at this stage may find their way onto an engraved award should a shortlisted entry be successful in winning Bronze, Silver or Gold.

The qualification period for audio for the 2017 Hospital Radio Awards is from 1st November 2015 to 31st October 2016. If you are planning to enter next year, now is the time to start saving your best bits! There are no plans to change any of the audio categories at this stage from this year.

Award Ceremony

The Hospital Broadcasting Association is proud to organise and support the award ceremony each year, an event which offers a unique opportunity for fellow broadcasters to meet, share ideas, and recognise volunteers for their achievements. The award ceremony takes place during a gala dinner on the Saturday evening of the HBA Annual Conference, The ceremony will be held at The Hilton Hotel, Watford on Saturday 19th March 2016.
